Riding Jackets

Like everything in horse riding, there are different sorts of jackets, used for different things. What you'll need to begin with is a water and windproof jacket, as at some point you're bound to be both very wet and very cold. These are best bought from a tack shop as ordinary jackets and anoraks just won't do the job. They are expensive to buy, but usually last for years. Some of them have different layers which can be taken apart, and makes them useful in both summer and winter. It's useful though to have lightweight and heavyweight jackets - taking a jacket apart isn't always the simplest option when you're in a hurry! Most of my jackets have been bought in sales, usually online, as this seems to be the cheapest way.

Once you get bitten by the horse riding bug, you might want to try a show - maybe a bit of showjumping or dressage. This means getting a black riding jacket, as there is usually a dress code and you have to have formal wear. Don't worry about these jackets though unless or until you want to do shows - they're not necessary or practical for everyday.
