7 reasons why you should learn to ride a horse

So, just why would you want to learn to ride a horse?  Well, it's a bit like learning to ride a bike, but more.  It's a life skill, and it teaches you about you.

1      It's gets you out of your comfort zone, and if you've never ridden before, presents you with a real challenge that you don't meet in day to day life.  It's not like the office.  It's not clean and tidy and not always safe.  It's on the edge.

2       Learning new things is good for you.  Learning to ride a horse isn't really something that you ever finish, it's a work in progress, a bit like life.  As soon as you've got one skill done and dusted, there's always something else to master.

3        It helps you conquer fear.  If you've never sat on a horse, your first try, especially as an adult, can be terrifying.  Some days you might think it's a fear you can't get over, but stick at it and you will, in small manageable steps.  What an achievement!

4        It gives you something to talk about at parties.  How many people do you know who can ride a horse?  Well, quite a few actually, and so will you soon.

5        It takes you on a mini adventure every time you get on.  And great memories - even the times you come off, 'praps especially the times you come off, are things you don't forget.

6         It brings you face to face with you and who you really are, with nowhere to hide.  And because of this it allows you to learn about you.  Will you get on again, or run away?  Will you stick it out till you master the skill, or give up?

7         It can be a mirror of your life.  Will you ride with passion or fear?  Will you give up easily or carry on?  Will you fight your horse, or negotiate?  Just what sort of rider will you be?

Riding horses isn't just about riding horses.  It's a chance to learn something about you.  Somehow the way you canter tells you a lot about your life.  Do you push forward or pull back, are you scared or excited, or maybe, like a lot of us, both at the same time.
