How to buy equine clothing on a budget

You can spend a fortune on buying clothes and equipment for riding, and for a lot of people, this is all part of the fun.  Clothes for the yard are usually best put on in layers so you can take them off and put them back on as necessary - it might be cold watching a friend riding in the school, but you soon warm up mucking out.  Some of us though are tied to a budget.

The important thing is the riding, not the clothes, but there are some things that are a must.

While it might seem a good idea just wear what you've already got, it is worth investing in 'proper' horse wear, either new or second hand.  Ordinary leggings just don't have the same comfort or durability as jodhpurs, and most high street clothing is neither warm enough or tough enough to do the job.  If you've not got a lot to spare on buying riding gear, stick to a few good quality essentials.

There are some things that are best bought new - like riding hats.  But for the rest, try
www.ebay.co.uk, equestrian boot sales and online tack shops.  Some of the larger livery yards or equestrial centres will have small ads for riding gear, so always check these out.  But most important of all, to really save money, remember -
Only buy the essentials!
